On a glorious fall day, the atmosphere in the Social Hall of Temple Shalom of Newton was so beautiful and bright. Everyone’s spirits were raised by the Ohara demonstration and workshop by Asae Takahashi, Second Associate Term Master from New York and president of the Ohara School of Ikebana NY Chapter.
President Tomoko Tanaka opened the program with welcoming words, introducing Consul General of Japan in Boston Mr. Seiichiro Takahashi, who spoke briefly to our members. We started the demonstration with the introduction of Takahashi sensei by the Program Chair Jonette Nagai.
Takahashi Sensei presented five characteristic arrangements of the Ohara School of Ikebana, providing detailed commentary, historical context and accompanied by a slide show.
Takahashi Sensei opened and closed her demonstration with a moribana arrangement, starting with traditional Color Scheme and ending with Landscape. Moribana, is a style that the founder of the Ohara School, Unshin Ohara, originated. Her second arrangement was Bunjin which is an arrangement in a tall vase which draws inspiration from traditional Chinese poetry. Followed by ‘My Hana Frame’, a popular style introduced recently. The fourth arrangement was a Rimpa arrangement which is intended to evoke paintings on a Japanese screen or fan. All of the arrangements were beautiful, and Takahashi Sensei even wrote and recited a poem at the end of the presentation inspired by camelia flowers used in the final arrangement.
In the afternoon following the demonstration and lunch, workshop participants were able to learn how to create a Hanakanade arrangement. Hanakanade is a style created by the current headmaster of the Ohara School, Hiroki Ohara and celebrates the beauty of the intersection of materials.
In the bright and marvelous atmosphere of the Social Hall attendees enjoyed a delightful and enriching day.
