Ikebana International, Boston Chapter #17 presented a spectacular Japanese Flower Exhibition at New England Botanic Garden, Tower Hill beginning on Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26.
Visitors were treated to over 50 beautiful floral exhibits created by 33 individuals representing the three main schools in our chapter, Ikenobo, Ohara and Sogetsu. This included 5 large floor displays arranged by Kaye Vosburgh, Tomoko Tanaka, Joanne Caccavale, Rita DeLollis and an Ohara group arrangement. Each school was featured in one of the venue areas providing the viewer with many styles studied in that particular school. More than 20 docents were in the different areas to answer questions and direct visitors to all the displays.
Seven “Pop-Up” Demonstrations were scheduled throughout the weekend providing many opportunities for the public to learn about Ikebana. Instructors from all three schools presented programs. Kaye Vosburgh, Tomoko Tanaka and Joanne Caccavale for Sogetsu, Teresa Silverman and Deborah Young for Ikenobo, and David Wilsey and Tom Maney for Ohara. The casual setting created a more intimate experience and encouraged questions from the audience. The demonstrators were pleased by the breadth of the questions and the audience gained a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the beauty of ikebana. All were very well attended with several having standing room only.
A children’s workshop was held on Sunday afternoon where the students created triangular bamboo straw panels and simple arrangements. We were also privileged to have four pottery vendors, Hiromi Satoh, David & Keiko Hergesheimer, Denny Howard and Patsy Cunningham with many wonderful selections of containers for sale throughout the show.
