Sogetsu Demonstration by Master Reito Oizumi

Master Oizumi, arriving in Boston at the height of the Spring explosion of color in New England, featured many beautiful flowering branches in her creations. She likes creating with branches and strong lines giving her works a sculptural quality. Ms. Oizumi created ten outstanding, beautiful contemporary arrangements finishing with a large floor arrangement that filled the entire stage with hollow tree trunk segments, thick tree vines and brilliantly colored flowering branches. The beauty of spring in New England was on full display.
Ms. Oizumi works reflect the boundless creativity of ikebana artists. Her creative ikebana links traditional and contemporary arts and crafts exploring the integration of three-dimensional elements. She views ikebana as a vital expression of Japanese aesthetics and is dedicated to sharing its creative potential with audiences worldwide. Particularly striking were an arrangement of glorious flowering wisteria branches and green maple branches set in a dazzling blue glass container and a red and white washi paper and cane sculpture suspended between two bamboo poles with flowing asparagus ferns. The audience was very appreciative for the abundance of beautiful arrangements on display around the venue.
We were pleased to receive a special message from Consul General Mr. Seiichiro Takahashi, and welcome Ms. Chieko Yoshida, Cultural Affairs and Public relations at the Consulate General of Japan in Boston. Following the morning demonstration, the afternoon workshop "Collaboration of ‘Airvase’ (paper sculpture) and Plants”, provided members of all three schools the opportunity to explore the possibilities of enhancing their own arrangements with 3-D paper sculptural elements. A creative and fun experience for the 50 workshop participants.
The entire event was a true celebration of Spring and an inspiration for all attendees.
