Demonstration by Ohara School Members

The program for the October 17, 2006 meeting, “Together With Nature”, was coordinated by Keiko Thayer, master teacher and chairman of the Ohara School. Keiko announced that the program was dedicated to Pauline Swaebe, a former president of II, who recently passed away. Ohara members demonstrating a variety of arrangements, with a brief description of their beautiful creations, are listed as follows:

Yae Yoshida Lang made an upright, Style A, Moribana arrangement, having the main line or subject (shushi), the second line (fukushi), fillers (chukan) and the object (kyakushi).

Sayoka Crabtree created a water viewing arrangement (kansuikei), where the main line comes from one corner and crosses the water. Only two kinds of materials were used.

Misako Inada demonstrated a free style arrangement of bittersweet and hydrangeas, using a large, low container. Keiko cautioned that it is very necessary to study the basic styles and have knowledge of them before attempting a free style arrangement.

Minal Akkad executed a new style that uses a combination of Moribana and Heika, where a tall vase sits in the middle of a moribana container.

Keiko Thayer demonstrated two arrangements. A free style moribana, using a low, textured container with driftwood, featuring the unusual Farfugium Japonicus, with its lovely yellow spotted leaves and yellow flower. The second was the Bunjincho style where she grouped Clivia leaves together and secured them with skewers before inserting in the container.

Hiroko Matsuyama made the final two arrangements. One was Nageire style with green persimmons and cosmos. The other was a free style using curly willow, dahlias and hosta leaves.

All of the arrangements were made from plants found in the garden or along the roadside. An inspiration as to what can be created from common materials.
