Description
A program commemorating the Boston Chapter’s Fiftieth Anniversary. Members only!

Boston Chapter’s 50th year celebration began with a fascinating program assembled by Mabel, “Ikebana International Boston Chapter #17 Celebrates 50 years from 1958-2008”.

We received our charter in September 1958 and it was exciting to see the original hand written charter on display. Other items exhibited were flower show awards, pictures covering the fifty years and other items pertaining to the history of our chapter.

A slide show began with pictures from 1958. One slide showed the 1959 work crew for the flower show. The staging at that time, was completely built by the crew. The Jordan Marsh store was a sponsor one year. Another slide, in 1997, showed Mr. Ohki at the MFA, where he assembled on stage, a large floor arrangement from start to finish. He demonstrated the assemblage of large branch materials and the techniques used to hold them together.

Contrasting the use of slides and pictures to today’s technology, Mabel noted what can be found on our website, www.ikebanaboston.org. Included in the information available on our website were pictures which can be clicked on, enlarged and printed. There is a link to Tokyo headquarters with options in English and Japanese. There is a timeline of Akane Teshigahara’s activities and a gallery of her arrangements. Recent and future events are listed as well as information on the different schools. Our website is abundant in information and members are encouraged to use this contemporary resource which was not available when our chapter began in 1958.

Mrs. Suzuki, the wife of the Japanese Consul General, congratulated us on our upcoming fiftieth celebration and commended our contribution and devotion to Ikebana.
