Member Presentation & Make your own container

Be creative, by making your own containers! Unique containers was the theme of this February general meeting. Masako Yatsuhashi opened the program by displaying a basket once owned by her grandmother in Japan. Her grandmother received this basket from the headmaster of the Ohara school in June 1918. It was made by a well-known first generation bamboo artist. Illustrating the passing on of Ikebana skills from one generation to the next: Masako studied the Ohara school under her grandmother’s tutelage. Masako is presently a teacher in the Ikenobo school.

Another unique container was displayed by Ans Vaatstra. It was a large metal sculptured container that she had purchased in Holland. Being a difficult container for arranging flowers, she made two sculptured pieces from chicken wire and plaster (with openings for flower placement), then spray-painted them a gunmetal color to blend with the sculpture. Ans then placed these pieces inside the container, a sculpture inside a sculpture, making an outstanding presentation.

Then it was the members turn to be creative! Joanne Caccavale led one group in making unusual bamboo containers, whether they were horizontal, upright or artistic structures. Ans provided iron stands and colorful plastic tubing for members to twist and turn into playful shapes. It was a morning of fun with everyone taking home a new, functional creation for arranging flowers.
